Fire at Istanbul Nightclub Kills 29 People

A fire broke out at a nightclub in Istanbul during renovations, resulting in the death of at least 29 people, Associated Press reports.

A fire erupted at the Masquerade nightclub, situated in a 16-story residential building in the Besiktas district, trapping workers and employees inside. Video footage showed flames reaching the third floor before being extinguished. The nightclub, closed for renovations during Ramadan, aimed to complete the work before the upcoming Eid holiday.

Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu stated that the nightclub lacked the necessary permits for construction and renovations. Eight individuals, including club managers and renovation supervisors, were detained for questioning. The area was sealed off, and residents were evacuated as a safety measure.
