On Thursday, California air regulators have approved strict regulations that would ban the sale of new gasoline cars by 2035.
The board's new regulations would also establish interim quotas for zero-emission cars with an emphasis on new models.
Starting with 2026 models, 35% of new automobiles, SUVs and small pickups sold in California will be required to be zero-emission vehicles.
The quota will rise each year, reaching 51% of all new car sales in 2028, 68% in 2030, and 100% by 2035.
The rules will come into effect in 2026, would not impact used vehicles, allowing them to stay on the roads.
