Putin Visits North Korea for the First Time in 24 Years

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his first visit to the country in 24 years and signed a partnership agreement pledging mutual aid if either country is attacked, Associated Press reports.

The agreement covers security, trade, investment, cultural and humanitarian ties, potentially making it the strongest agreement since the Soviet Union’s collapse. The leaders discussed supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine and enhancing North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. They also signed agreements on building a road bridge and cooperating in healthcare. Putin praised North Korea’s support, while Kim pledged full backing for Russia.

The partnership raises concerns in the West over potential arms deals and technology transfers between the countries, possibly enhancing North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. The US and its allies worry about North Korea supplying Russia with munitions for the Ukraine war.
