Elon Musk Drops Lawsuit Against OpenAI

Elon Musk has decided to withdraw his lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, which accused them of straying from the company’s original mission of developing AI for the public good, Reuters reports.

Musk claimed in the lawsuit that OpenAI violated its founding principles by prioritizing financial gains, particularly highlighted by the release of GPT-4. Musk sought to compel OpenAI to make its research public and prevent it from financially benefiting companies like Microsoft. OpenAI countered, saying the lawsuit was incoherent and an attempt by Musk to benefit from OpenAI’s technological advancements. Musk’s attorneys requested the dismissal without providing a reason, but it was done without prejudice, allowing for a potential refile.

This lawsuit stemmed from Musk’s longstanding opposition to OpenAI, a company he co-founded, that has since received significant funding from Microsoft and shifted focus towards profit-making.
