Macron Dissolves French Parliament and Calls for New Elections After EU Vote Defeat

French President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the lower house of parliament after his party suffered a major defeat by the far-right National Rally in the European elections, Associated Press reports.

National Rally leader Marine Le Pen welcomed the move, expressing readiness to lead and prioritize national interests. Le Pen’s party secured around 31%-32% of the vote, double that of Macron’s Renaissance party, which received around 15%. The Socialist Party also saw a resurgence with around 14% of the votes with far-left politician Francois Ruffin calling for a united front among leftist parties.

Macron’s move is risky, as it could enhance Le Pen’s power if her party gains a parliamentary majority. This situation could lead to a power-sharing arrangement known as “cohabitation.” Macron’s decision aims to address public concerns and demonstrate his confidence in democracy. This decision sets up legislative elections in two rounds on June 30 and July 7.
