Sunak and Starmer Clash Over Tax, Cost of Living and Health in TV Debate

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer clashed over issues like tax, the cost of living, and the health system in a televised debate ahead of the July 4 election, Associated Press reports.

Sunak highlighted his economic management, citing a significant drop in inflation, and anti-immigration stance, promising tough measures like deporting asylum-seekers to Rwanda. Starmer called for change, criticizing the Conservatives’ 14-year rule and focusing on Tory mismanagement under past PMs Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. Both leaders struggled to outline how they would fund solutions to the country’s problems.

The debate didn’t produce a clear winner, benefiting Sunak, who is trailing in the polls. Meanwhile, Nigel Farage re-entered politics, running for Parliament with the right-wing party Reform UK, potentially splitting the conservative vote and complicating Sunak’s campaign.
