Switzerland’s Nemo Wins Eurovision 2024 with “The Code”

Swiss singer Nemo has won the 68th Eurovision Song Contest with their song “The Code,” becoming the first nonbinary winner of the contest, Associated Press reports.

The 24-year-old singer expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the importance of the contest standing for peace and dignity for all. Nemo’s victory marked Switzerland’s first victory in the contest since 1988 and was a significant moment celebrated by the LGBT community. His win reflects a broader trend of Eurovision embracing diversity and inclusivity.

Nemo’s win came after a turbulent year for Eurovision, with controversies surrounding Israel’s participation with singer Eden Golan. Despite protests against her participation, Golan’s song “Hurricane” placed fifth. The event faced controversy, including the expulsion of Dutch competitor Joost Klein over a backstage altercation, currently under investigation by the police.
