US Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to Force Vote on Ousting House Speaker Mike Johnson

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced her intention to call for a vote next week to remove US House Speaker Mike Johnson from his position, Associated Press reports.

Greene, along with Rep. Thomas Massie, criticized Johnson’s leadership and called for a vote to replace him. They intend to give their colleagues the weekend to consider their options before proceeding with the vote. Johnson denounced Greene’s move as damaging to the Republican Conference and the country. The move risks further division within the Republican Party as lawmakers are now compelled to choose between standing by Johnson or aligning with Greene.

Democrats see Johnson as a potential partner in governance, despite ideological differences. Democratic leaders, led by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, have announced their intention to vote in favor of tabling Greene’s motion, safeguarding Johnson’s position for now. However, some Democrats have expressed reservations about supporting Johnson, particularly due to his involvement in former President Trump’s legal challenges to the 2020 presidential election.
