First Failed Asylum Seeker in the UK Voluntarily Sent to Rwanda

The UK has started preparations to deport migrants to Kigali in Rwanda this summer, as part of the country’s efforts to curb illegal immigration, Associated Press reports.

An unsuccessful asylum-seeker, whose nationality wasn’t disclosed, voluntarily relocated to Rwanda after reportedly receiving 3,000 pounds ($3,750) to leave. Rwandan authorities will assess the deportee’s status and decide accordingly.

The UK Parliament recently approved legislation allowing deportations to Rwanda, despite criticism from human rights groups. The legislation, known as the Safety of Rwanda Bill, aims to ensure the safety of migrants sent to Rwanda. The UK government hopes these deportations will deter migrants from taking the arduous journey to Britain. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that deportation flights would start in July, but the exact number of migrants detained and their current location remain undisclosed.

However, the plan has faced condemnation from the UN’s refugee agency and the Council of Europe. Critics argue for providing safe and legal routes for migrants instead of outsourcing the problem.
