US Senate Passes $95 Billion Aid Package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan

The US Senate has passed a $95 billion war aid package to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan with overwhelming support, sending the legislation to President Joe Biden for signing, Associated Press reports.

The bill, approved by an overwhelming 79-18 vote, includes $61 billion for Ukraine, aiming to bolster its defense against Russia’s aggression. The legislation also allocates $26 billion for Israel, including humanitarian aid for Gaza, and $8 billion to counter Chinese threats in Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific. The bill also includes provisions to seize frozen Russian assets and impose sanctions on Iran, Russia, China, and criminal organizations trafficking fentanyl.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer emphasized the importance of standing with US allies, while Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell highlighted the significance of the aid in countering Russian aggression.

Despite broad congressional support, some Republicans expressed skepticism, questioning US involvement in foreign conflicts and arguing that the US should focus on domestic issues like border security.
