China Issues Highest-Level Rainstorm Warning, Evacuates 100,000 in Guangdong

The Chinese government issued its highest-level rainstorm warning and evacuated over 100,000 people as heavy rain continues to pound the southern province of Guangdong, Al Jazeera reports.

Guangdong, China’s manufacturing hub with 127 million residents, has seen swelling rivers and ongoing downpours. Authorities in cities like Shenzhen have urged residents to take precautions and avoid flood-prone areas. State media warned of the risk of floods at a level seen once in a century, and the flooding has reportedly already killed 4 people with 10 others missing.

Scientists say that climate change, driven by human-emitted greenhouse gases, is making extreme weather events more frequent and intense. China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, has faced severe floods, droughts, and record heat in recent years. Despite the challenges, swift response measures have helped lower casualties compared to previous decades.
