‘Matrix 5’ Confirmed in the Works at Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. has announced the development of a fifth “Matrix” movie, marking a return to the iconic franchise, Variety reports.

Notably, this installment will be the first without Lana or Lily Wachowski directing. Instead, this one will be directed by Drew Goddard, known for “The Martian,” with Lana Wachowski serving as an executive producer. Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President Jesse Ehrman expressed excitement for Goddard’s vision, aiming to honor the Wachowskis’ legacy. Goddard, inspired by the Wachowskis’ work, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the franchise.

“The Matrix” series, which began in 1999, is highly influential in science fiction, spawning three sequels, including 2021’s “The Matrix Resurrections,” directed by Lana Wachowski. However, the latest installment underperformed at the box office, grossing just $159 million worldwide against its $190 million budget.
