China Bans Intel and AMD Chips in Government Computers

China has issued new guidelines aimed at phasing out US microprocessors from companies like Intel and AMD in government computers and servers, as part of a broader effort to replace foreign technology with domestic alternatives, Financial Times reports.

The guidelines, issued by the Finance Ministry and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), require government agencies to prioritize “safe and reliable” processors and operating systems from Chinese companies. The stricter procurement rules also target Microsoft’s Windows operating system and foreign-made database software.

This move aligns with China’s strategy of technological self-reliance and state-owned enterprises have been instructed to transition to domestic technology providers by 2027. This shift away from foreign hardware could impact US companies like Intel and AMD, which rely heavily on the Chinese market.
