Kremlin Says Russia ‘at War’ for the First Time

The Kremlin has shifted its language regarding the conflict in Ukraine, now referring to it as a “war” due to Western intervention on Ukraine’s side, Reuters reports.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov’s remarks signal a departure from the previous designation of the conflict as a “special military operation,” aiming to mentally prepare Russians for a prolonged struggle. While Peskov clarified that Russia still officially considers its actions in Ukraine as a “special military operation,” he acknowledged that the conflict has evolved into a war, especially as the West increases its involvement.

The change in terminology reflects a shift in Russia’s mindset, acknowledging that the conflict will persist longer than initially anticipated. Peskov emphasized the need to fully “liberate” claimed regions and secure Crimea, underscoring Russia’s stance on territorial control.
