Russia Replaces Navy Chief After Black Sea Fleet Losses

Russia has appointed Admiral Alexander Moiseyev as the acting commander-in-chief of Russia’s navy following the dismissal of his predecessor due to repeated attacks on the Black Sea Fleet by Ukrainian forces, Al Jazeera reports.

Moiseyev, formerly commander of Russia’s Northern Fleet, assumed his new role after an official ceremony, replacing Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, who had held the position for nearly five years. Moiseyev, 61, brings extensive naval experience, having served on nuclear submarines for over 29 years.

Yevmenov’s removal comes after a series of losses of Russian warships, including the recent sinking of a military patrol boat, causing an embarrassment for Moscow. Ukrainian forces claim to have destroyed over two dozen Russian ships since the conflict began in February 2022, forcing Russia to relocate ships from Crimea’s Sevastopol to Novorossiysk.
