China Approves Over 40 AI Models for Public Use

China has approved over 40 artificial intelligence (AI) models for public use in the first six months of its approval process, as the country aims to compete with the US in AI development, Reuters reports.

Last week, Chinese regulators approved 14 large language models (LLMs) for public use, including companies like Xiaomi Corp, 4Paradigm, and 01.AI. China has not disclosed the complete list of approved companies, but reports suggest more than 40 AI models have been approved so far.

China introduced the requirement for tech companies to obtain regulatory approval for their LLMs in August 2023, reflecting China’s strategy to advance AI development under regulatory control.
