US Approves F-16 Fighter Jet Sale to Turkey, F-35 Sale to Greece

The Biden administration has approved the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey following Turkey’s ratification of Sweden’s NATO membership, and another sale of F-35 fighter jets to Greece, Associated Press reports.

The $23 billion sale includes 40 new F-16s and equipment to modernize 79 existing F-16s. In addition, the administration approved an $8.6 billion sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets and related equipment to Greece.

The approval came after Turkey deposited its ratification of Sweden’s NATO membership and key members of Congress lifted their objections. The administration supported the sale despite objections from some lawmakers over human rights concerns.

The formal accession of Sweden to NATO now awaits approval from Hungary, the last remaining NATO ally yet to endorse it.
