Turkey’s Erdogan Signs Sweden’s NATO Membership Ratification

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has approved Sweden’s bid to join NATO, ending months of delay and leaving only Hungary as the remaining obstacle to Sweden’s NATO membership, Reuters reports.

Erdogan’s decision followed the Turkish parliament’s ratification of Sweden’s NATO application, clearing a significant hurdle. The approval, coming after months of delay, leaves only Hungary as the remaining obstacle to Sweden’s NATO membership.

The delay, while frustrating some allies, allowed Turkey to negotiate certain concessions, including expectations for the US to secure Congress’ endorsement for a $20 billion sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey.
