Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the besieged town of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine, where intense fighting with Russian forces is ongoing, to discuss defense matters and award medals to soldiers, Reuters reports.
Russian attacks on Avdiivka escalated in mid-October, following Ukraine’s unsuccessful attempts to advance against entrenched Russian positions earlier in the summer.
Avdiivka has been the focal point of intense fighting and has faced significant damage. The situation is reminiscent of the battle for Bakhmut, another eastern city that fell to Russian forces in May.
