EU to Open Membership Talks with Ukraine and Moldova, But No New European Aid

The European Union failed to reach an agreement on a €50 billion ($54 billion) financial aid package for Ukraine, with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban vetoing the proposal, Associated Press reports.

This comes as a setback for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who also faced challenges in securing additional aid from the US during his recent visit to Washington.

Despite the setback, the EU decided to open accession talks with Ukraine after Orban, who had also threatened to veto the accession talks, ultimately abstained from using his veto, emphasizing that Ukraine is not ready for EU membership.

EU leaders also announced it would open membership negotiations with Ukraine’s neighbor Moldova.
