European Union officials have called on major social media platforms to increase their efforts to combat online misinformation and disinformation, CNN reports.
X (formerly Twitter) was criticized for having the highest ratio of misinformation and disinformation posts among platforms that submitted reports to the EU.
X had previously withdrawn from commitments to follow the EU’s voluntary code of conduct on disinformation.
The EU views adherence to this code as a factor in determining a platform’s compliance with the Digital Services Act, which imposes strict regulations on online platforms.
