EU Introduces New Big Tech Rules

The European Union has introduced new rules under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) that will impact Big Tech, AP News reports.

The new rules will affect six major tech companies, including Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Meta, and ByteDance.

The DMA seeks to prevent tech giants classified as “gatekeepers” from monopolizing digital markets and aims to promote fair competition.

The DMA will allow users to send messages to rival platforms, avoid personalized ads, and choose their preferred search engine or browser.

For example, messaging services will be required to work with one another and allow a Telegram user to exchange texts with WhatsApp users.

Tech companies have six months to comply or face fines of 10-20% of a company’s annual global revenue, or even the breakup of the company.
