Japan to Release Treated Fukushima Radioactive Water Into the Ocean

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan is set to release treated radioactive wastewater into the Pacific Ocean, AP News reports.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has granted final approval for Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) to begin the process.

The release has generated concerns among Japanese fishing groups and neighboring countries like South Korea and China.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has asserted that the impact on both the environment and human health would be negligible.

The controversial move is seen as necessary for the ongoing cleanup of the facility after it experienced reactor meltdowns in 2011.
