No New Grain Deal Reached at Russia-Africa Summit

African leaders met with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg, AP News reports.

African leaders called for peace in the region and the need to resume the grain deal through the Black Sea.

Putin pledged to ship 25,000 to 50,000 tons of grain for free to six African nations each in the next three to four months.

However, the amount is significantly less than the 725,000 tons previously shipped under the UN grain deal.

Fewer than 20 African leaders attended the summit, compared to the 43 leaders that previously gathered in 2019.
