NATO Allies Offer Security Assurances to Ukraine, But No NATO Membership

The US and global allies have offered new security assurances to Ukraine at the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, but no NATO membership, Reuters reports.

These assurances aim to provide long-term protection against Russia as Ukraine seeks membership in the NATO alliance.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had expressed disappointment over the absence of an invitation or timetable for NATO membership.

The new NATO-Ukraine Council was established to strengthen cooperation between Kyiv and the 31-nation alliance.

The G7 established a framework for bilateral negotiations to provide military support, financial assistance, intelligence sharing, and immediate action in the event of a Russian attack.

Zelensky also held bilateral meetings with the US, Canada, Germany, Britain, Japan and the Netherlands to secure more arms for his counteroffensive.
