UN Nuclear Agency Approves Japan’s Plan to Release Fukushima Radioactive Water

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has approved Japan’s plan to release treated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea, AP News reports.

The IAEA report that Japan’s plan comply with international standards and the dilution method used is a proven technique employed in other countries.

However, the plan faces opposition from groups in China, South Korea and some Pacific Island nations, due to safety concerns and political reasons.

Local fishing organizations are also worried about potential damage to their reputation even if their catch is not contaminated.

In 2011, an earthquake and tsunami damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant’s cooling system, causing three reactors to melt and contaminate their cooling water.
