Japan Reforms Sex Crime Laws, Raises Age of Consent from 13 to 16

Japan is raising the age of sexual consent to 16 and rewriting its laws regarding sexual harassment and rape, The Guardian reports.

Since 1907, The country’s sexual legal age had been 13, which was one of the lowest in the world.

The new bill expands the list of rape prosecutions to include victims under the influence of alcohol, drugs, being frightened, and perpetrators taking advantage of social status.

Previously, victims had to have put up enough resistance and prosecutors had to prove victims were incapacitated due to violence or intimidation.
