Amazon to Pay Over $30 Million for Alexa and Ring Privacy Violations

Amazon has agreed to pay the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over $30 million in settlements due to privacy violations, CNBC reports.

The FTC filed a lawsuit against Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant for allegedly illegally collecting children’s data through their profiles.

Amazon will pay $25 million and will delete inactive child accounts, voice recordings and geolocation information.

The FTC also filed a second lawsuit against Amazon’s Ring doorbell unit for allegedly unfair or deceptive business practices.

Amazon agreed to pay $5.8 million and delete any videos of individual customers’ faces prior to 2018.

Amazon is also prohibited from using the information gathered to train its algorithms.
