Meta Hit with Record $1.3 Billion Fine over Data Privacy in the EU

Tech giant Meta has been hit with a record €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion) fine by the European Union privacy regulator, Reuters reports.

Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) said Meta’s Facebook transferred users’ data to the United States beyond a 2020 EU court ruling.

The social media platform said that it “sets a dangerous precedent for countless other companies” and will appeal the ruling.

The fine surpasses the previous record EU privacy fine of €746 million given to Amazon in 2021.
