Sweden Says Turkey is Asking for Too Much Over NATO Application

On Sunday, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said he is confident that Turkey will accept Sweden’s NATO application, but is unable to fulfill all of Ankara’s conditions.

Turkey has opposed Sweden and Finland’s NATO application due to concerns of the pair harbouring militants from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.

In 2022, Sweden and Finland signed a three-way agreement with Turkey to address Ankara’s concerns. Now, Kristersson claims Turkey’s demands have been outside the scope of the agreement.

“From time to time, Turkey mentions individuals that they want to see extradited from Sweden. To that I have said that those issues are handled within Swedish law.”
