California Bans Tesla from Advertising Its Electric Cars as ‘Full Self-Driving’

In 2023, a new California law bans Tesla and other automakers from advertising their cars as “Fully Self-Driving” (FSD).

The new law requires automakers to ensure consumers understand the capabilities and limitations of semi-autonomous driving technologies.

Tesla claims its cars have a FSD feature, but has failed to demonstrate it can safely drive without driver assistance. On its website the feature require “active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous”.

“A manufacturer or dealer shall not name any partial driving automation feature, or describe any partial driving automation feature in marketing materials, using language that implies or would otherwise lead a reasonable person to believe, that the feature allows the vehicle to function as an autonomous vehicle, as defined in Section 38750, or otherwise has functionality not actually included in the feature.”
