Online Safety Bill to Criminalize Deepfake Porn in England and Wales

A planned new law would make it illegal to share pornographic deepfakes without consent in England and Wales.

Deepfake technology manipulates images by replacing a person’s face on someone else’s body using machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The crackdown is part of the Online Safety Bill, which will make it easier to charge people sharing intimate images without consent.

Previously some men admitted to sharing women’s intimate pictures without consent, but avoided prosecution because they claim they did not intend to cause harm.

One in 14 adults in England and Wales is believed to have been threatened with their intimate pictures being shared against their will.
