NASA’s Orion Capsule Arrives at the Moon

On Monday, NASA’s Orion capsule reached the moon and made its close approach of 130 km (81 miles) before emerging from behind the moon.

Last Wednesday, the Artemis I mission launched a crewless Orion capsule into space using the Space Launch System (SLS) from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

This coming weekend, the capsule will travel almost 433,000 km (270,000 miles) from Earth and break NASA’s distance record for a spacecraft designed for astronauts.

If the mission is a success, then NASA will attempt a crewed Artemis II flight around the moon in 2024, followed by a lunar landing in 2025.
