Workers Flee China’s Covid Lockdown at Foxconn’s Largest iPhone Factory

Over the weekend, workers have escaped from the Foxconn plant, the world’s largest iPhone factory in central China, amid a coronavirus outbreak.

Zhengzhou, a city of 10 million have partially been locked down after dozens of Covid cases were discovered, due to its zero-Covid strategy.

The situation at the plant gradually deteriorated with food and medical supplies running low and workers being locked in dormitory rooms for quarantine.

Hundreds of workers then left the factory, and local authorities scrambled to organize buses to return the workers to their hometowns.

In 2019, Foxconn was China’s third-largest exporter, shipping $32 billion worth of electronics abroad, according to a think-tank.

Most of Apple’s supply chain is based in China, which leaves the US tech company exposed to Beijing’s notorious zero-Covid policies.
