NASA Scientists in Awe of Webb Telescope’s ‘First Light’ Images

On Christmas Day, 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope was sent into orbit by a European rocket. Six months later and it's already revealing new insights about our cosmos.
"The images are being taken right now. There is already some amazing science in the can, and some others are yet to be taken as we go forward. We are in the middle of getting the history-making data down."

- Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA
On July 12, at 10:30 am ET (14:30 UTC), NASA stated it will release a number of photographs from the Webb's "first light" observations.

Photos and other data include the deepest-field image of the universe ever obtained and the spectrum of an exoplanet's atmosphere.

Webb can recognize the infrared fingerprints of carbon dioxide and ozone, which will provide important hints regarding the habitability of planets.
