Autonomous Cargo Ship Completes World’s First Transoceanic Voyage

Avikus, a subsidiary of Hyundai, has successfully completed the first transoceanic voyage of a large merchant ship using autonomous navigation technologies.
The ship called Prism Courage traveled over 10,000 nautical miles. The voyage took 33 days to complete.

Setting off from the Gulf of Mexico, the Prism Courage sailed through the Panama Canal before crossing the Pacific Ocean to the Boryeong LNG Terminal in South Korea.
The navigational software is called HiNAS 2.0 and is a Level 2 autonomous navigation technology that can control and operate the ship.

Its Level 1 functions, recognize and judge objects in its environment, the software uses artificial intelligence trained to recognize nearby ships, weather, and wave heights.
Route optimization increased fuel efficiency by around 7% and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by around 5%, according to Avikus.
